About this resource

A ring-bound naming deck for the student who cannot yet read a WH word on sight. Every one of five WH words gets three leveled cards: Level 1 is the picture alone (errorless starting point), Level 2 adds the printed word next to the same picture, and Level 3 is the printed word alone, with no picture at all. Cut apart, punched near the top edge, and threaded on a one-inch book ring, so the same deck moves between a desk, a speech room and home.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

It is a fillable PDF: type into the log, roll-up and family-page fields, or print and use a pen. It works offline with no account or subscription. It is NOT an editable online slideshow or word-processor document, and it is not a language assessment.

It covers five WH words -- who, what, where, when, why -- not six: "how" has no single clean picture to anchor it and is left out on purpose. The five anchor pictures on the Level 1 cards (a person, a package, a pin, a clock, a question mark) are not claimed to spell out the word on sight; Level 1 works through repeated pairing, saying the word every time the card is shown. This file does not set a cueing method, a fading schedule, or a rule for when a word moves between levels -- every one of those is the adult's own written call.

Who This Is For

Speech-language pathologists and special education teams with young or pre-reading students building toward reading a WH word independently, and the families who get the practice page sent home.
