About this resource
A complete word-family practice kit for kindergarten and first grade: five families (–at, –an, –ap, –ig, –op), twelve pictured words, three worksheet formats that get progressively less support — trace the rime, build the word by filling in the one missing part, and write the whole word independently from the picture alone.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (22 pages)
- 6 practice pages — 3 formats (Trace the Rime, Build the Word, Write It Yourself) x 2 sets, split by picture style so no page mixes a full-color picture beside a black-line one
- 12 pictured words across 5 families, the exact words and pictures behind this store's Word Families Cut & Paste
- 1 generated answer key, 1 word bank listing every word/onset/rime and which part Build blanks, 1 picture key grouped by family
- 1 tracker (one student, all 12 words), 1 class roll-up grid, type-in or print
- 1 team note page and 1 home-practice page
- 1 filled example, 1 phrase bank, 1 binder cover with six divider tabs
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a contents page that gives every page number
A Worksheet, Not A Sort
Word Families Cut & Paste (this store) is a scissors-and-glue sort: pieces are cut from a strip and glued into a slot, with a spare piece that fits nowhere. Nothing here is cut. Every mark is made directly on the page in pencil — trace over printed letters, fill in the one missing part, or write the whole word with nothing printed at all.
Three Formats, Easiest To Hardest
Trace the Rime prints the rime and the whole word hollow to go over. Build the Word prints one part (the onset or the rime) and leaves the other blank, split roughly in half across the word list so it is genuinely two different asks, not one mechanic repeated. Write It Yourself shows the picture only — no letters at all — for independent recall.
No Clip Art
Pictures are drawn from this store's own vector art: full-color pictures where an honest single-object picture exists, and this store's own black-line drawings for the handful of words (fan, mop, top and their page-mates) that have no honest color equivalent.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the word bank, the class grid, the team note and the home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the practice tiles themselves are always printed and completed with a pencil. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten and first-grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any small group building word-family reading and spelling at or below grade level.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A word-family worksheet set with the record-keeping and family communication around it. It is not a full phonics curriculum, not an assessment, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress.
