About this resource
An array is objects in equal rows and equal columns, and children need to see it on the wall before they can add it up. This Array Anchor Chart set gives you big posters for rows and columns, repeated addition, equal groups and real-life arrays, then notebook-size charts to cut and glue and practice pages children can work on by themselves. It is a 31-page fillable PDF for grades 2 and 3.
WHAT IS INCLUDED (31 pages)
- 4 posters on 6 sheets for the wall: Arrays (a big dot array with the rows labeled across and the columns labeled down), Repeated Addition (3 rows of 4 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 and 4 columns of 3 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12, with a "try one" below), Equal Groups (2 groups of 5 and 4 groups of 3 lined up into arrays) and Real-Life Arrays (an egg carton, a window, a muffin tin and a chocolate bar, each drawn as one object). The Arrays and Repeated Addition posters each come with an ink-saver copy, which is why 4 posters take 6 sheets.
- 12 pieces to cut on 2 cut sheets, set edge to edge so every cut is one straight line: 6 notebook-size mini charts (array, rows, columns, add the rows, add the columns, equal groups) and 6 array cards to glue on the match pages.
- 12 student pages, each with a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture and room to work: Row or Column (circle one, 6 arrays), Count the Rows and Columns (6 arrays), Not an Array (4 sets of 3 pictures, circle the one with a short row), Draw the Array (4 prompts on a grid), Match and Glue (two sheets, 3 arrays each), Write the Sentence in three steps (rows given, array only, and two ways with a times sentence), Arrays Around Us (4 real-life pictures), Array Stories (3 stories with room to draw) and Find an Array (draw one from school and one from home).
- Three steps on the write-the-sentence page, marked with small shapes, not numbers: rows given, array only, and write it two ways.
- Teacher pages: Start Here with a which-page-when table, how to teach it in 5 short routines, a filled example (an invented child; every answer invented), 2 answer keys, a note home, a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups, a binder cover with spine and tabs, and a What's Next page.
- Terms of use and a thank-you page.
How To Use It
Hang the Arrays poster and trace a row from left to right and a column from top to bottom with your finger. Add the rows on the Repeated Addition poster, then check with the columns: the total is the same. Line up equal groups into rows. Hand out the notebook charts for children to glue in, then the array cards to match, then the practice pages. Answers are on 2 key pages.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and room to circle, draw, write or glue. Dots, arrows and objects are big and plain, drawn flat and clear. The cutting sheets put the pieces edge to edge, and every cut sheet has at least 5 pieces. Every page reads in black and white too, and the Arrays and Repeated Addition posters come with an ink-saver copy.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, the answer blanks on the practice pages, the note home and every notes area are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The posters are print pages. You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF for printing and typing; it is not a slide or word processor file.
Who This Is For
Teachers of grades 2 and 3, resource rooms and self-contained classrooms who want an array anchor chart for the wall and practice that children can see, draw and check for themselves.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Classroom posters and working paper for arrays, rows and columns, repeated addition and equal groups. It is not a full math curriculum, an assessment or a therapy program, and it makes no health claims. Your school decides what a child should be able to do and when.
