About this resource
Every building in Array City is an array: its windows sit in rows and columns. Children count them, draw them, write the equation, add the rows and cut out buildings to make a class city. This is a fillable PDF with 20 student sheets in color, built for grades 2 to 4: no art skills and no prep beyond printing and cutting.
What Is Included
- 5 count-the-windows sheets: write the rows, the columns and the total; write the equation both ways; add the rows then multiply; circle the building with more windows.
- 5 draw-the-building sheets: color 3 rows of 5 on a window grid, draw from an equation, draw from a repeated addition such as 4 + 4 + 4, and flip an array to see that the total stays the same.
- 5 cut-and-glue sheets: 18 equation and addition tags to glue by their buildings (3 sheets of 6), and 12 cut-out buildings to color, write on and cut out (2 sheets of 6).
- 2 my-city sheets: plan one big building, then design four buildings and add up the windows.
- 3 array words and story sheets: a labeled building showing row, column and array with sentence starters, picture arrays (cars, flowers, buses, fire trucks) and 3 array stories to show with dots.
- Teacher pages: Start Here with a which-page-when table, 2 answer keys, a tracker with a roll-up, a filled example (an invented student), a family page, a What's Next page, terms of use and a thank-you page.
How To Use It
1. Pick a section from the Start Here page and print the sheet you need.
2. Hand it over. Each sheet has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and room to work. A small shape in the corner tells you the level: a circle (4 sheets) is starting, a square (8 sheets) is building, a triangle (7 sheets) is ready for more.
3. Check with the answer key, then color a box on the tracker for each right answer.
4. For a class city, print the cut-out building sheets, let each child color and write on theirs, cut them out and glue them in a row on a long strip of paper or a bulletin board.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Buildings, windows and answer boxes are big and plain. The cutting sheets put the pieces edge to edge, so each cut is one straight line, and every sheet has at least 5 pieces. Every page reads in black and white too.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, the equation boxes and every answer box are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The windows are colored by hand on a printed page. You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF for printing and typing; it is not a slide or word processor file.
Who This Is For
Teachers of grades 2 to 4, resource rooms and self-contained classrooms who want arrays children can see, color and check for themselves.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Working paper for counting, drawing and writing about arrays, repeated addition and the first multiplication equations. It is not a full math curriculum, an assessment or a therapy program, and it makes no health claims. Your school decides what a child should be able to do and when.
More For Your Math Block
Pair it with the live Rows and Columns Poster from Bright Path Sped, which puts the words "row" and "column" on your wall and has array cards to cut.
