About this resource
Teach when to spell /k/ at the start of a word with c or k, with one picture each: the cat letter takes a, o and u, and the kite letter takes i and e. This is 21 pages: two big letter posters for your wall, a c-or-k rule chart, word cards to cut and sort, a sort mat, two practice pages and desk strips so the rule stays close. Print what you need, or type into the pages first.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (21 pages)
- 2 big letter posters, one to a page: a huge C with a, o and u inside it (the cat), and a huge K with i and e inside it (the kite). Each poster has 6 picture words (cat, cone, cave, candy, carrot, cup; kite, kick, key, kitchen, king, kid) and a "more words" line with 4 word-only examples in all (cub, cot, kit, keep).
- 1 rule chart, "c or k?", with the cat, the kite and three picture words under each on one page.
- 12 picture word cards to cut, in color and in ink-saver. Each card has a picture and its word, set edge to edge, 3 across and 4 down, so each cut is one straight line.
- 8 desk strips to cut on each sheet, in color and in ink-saver: the cat and the kite with the rule beside each. 40 pieces across four cut sheets in all.
- 1 sort mat with a home for c and for k and lines to write each word.
- 2 practice pages, 18 items in all, each with a picture: fill in c or k (10 items, with a line to write the whole word), and circle c or k then write the word (8 items, plus a line for your own c word and your own k word).
- Teacher pages: Start Here with a which-page-when chart, five short steps to teach it, an answer key, a class roll-up, a filled example (an invented class), a note to families and a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups.
- Contents, terms of use and a thank-you page with what's next.
How To Use It
Hang the cat and kite posters first and read the words under each one together. Point to the vowels inside each letter. Cut the word cards and let children sort them on the mat: look at the letter after the first one; a, o or u goes with the cat, i or e goes with the kite. Children then fill in c or k, and later circle c or k and write the word. Give each child a desk strip to keep the rule close, and use the roll-up to see which words to practice again.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and room to write. The first letter is colored in each word, and everything reads in black and white too. Cut pages come in a color set and an ink-saver set.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, the sort mat, the practice pages, the class roll-up, the family note and every notes area are type-in fields in any PDF reader. You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten to 2nd grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, phonics and spelling centers, paraprofessionals, substitutes, and families who want to practice the same rule at home.
