About this resource
Christmas short-vowel word practice a young child can actually finish: real CVC words (hat, pig, mop, bun) in short Christmas sentences, big letters, boxes with room to write, and a pair of scissors only where it counts. Five different things to do with the same kind of word, 90 things in all, and the record-keeping around them. Every student page has a "My name" line at the top.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (30 pages)
- 13 student pages in 5 formats: 3 Read and Circle, 2 Missing Vowel, 2 Different Vowel, 4 Sort, Cut and Glue, 2 Build the Word
- 90 things to do: 18 questions, 16 missing vowels, 16 rows, 24 words to cut and sort, 16 words to build
- 3 answer keys, made from the same data as the pages
- 1 tracker (13 rows), 1 class progress grid (15 rows)
- 1 team note page and 1 home page (three words to write and a star to color for each day)
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (16 starters), 1 binder cover, and 6 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, and a contents page that gives every page number and lists the six words on every cut page
The Formats
1. Read and Circle (pages 6–8) — read one to three short sentences ("Sam has a hat. Meg can hop."), then circle the name that answers "Who...?" from three boxes. One dot: one sentence. Two dots: two sentences. Three dots: three sentences. 6 questions a page, 18 in all.
2. Missing Vowel (pages 9–10) — a sentence with one vowel left out of one word, and a Word Box of eight to check with. 8 words a page, 16 in all; each blank fits exactly one word in the box. On the one-dot page the five vowels are printed above the sentences.
3. Different Vowel (pages 11–12) — four words in a row; three have the same short vowel, circle the one that does not. 8 rows a page, 16 in all. On the three-dot page the odd vowel and the group vowel sit one step apart in a, e, i, o, u.
4. Sort, Cut and Glue (pages 13–16) — cut six words apart and glue each in the box for the vowel it has. Six pieces a page, edge to edge in two rows of three: three straight cuts. 24 words in all, each cut on one page only. The one-dot pages have three words for each vowel; the two-dot pages have two and four.
5. Build the Word (pages 17–18) — put the letter tiles in order and write the word in three boxes, then check it against the Word Box of eight. 8 words a page, 16 in all. On the one-dot page the vowel is already in the middle box and two tiles are given.
Of the student pages, only the 4 Sort, Cut and Glue pages use scissors (the divider tabs at the back are cut too). Every other student page is pencil work.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture, large letters and words in a rounded font, boxes with room to write, and dots (not words) to show which level a page is. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. There is no clip art: the child reads the word, listens for the vowel in the middle, and uses the letters.
The Words
Every word that is sorted, built or filled in is a true CVC word: one consonant, one short vowel, one consonant (a, e, i, o and u all appear). The sentences use those words plus a few sight words (a, the, is, has, can, who, and, to, on, in, it) and names. The words are typed into this file under their short vowels, and a word sits under one vowel only. Nothing here is claimed to match any program's word list.
Checked In Code
In every Word Box no two words differ only in the vowel and no two are the same letters in a different order, so each blank and each scramble has one answer. The correct answer sits in a different box from row to row (no run of three in a row, every box used on every page), and the answer keys come from the same data as the pages.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; 203 fields in all. The letters a student circles and writes are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who is still learning to read and build short-vowel words. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Christmas short-vowel word practice with the record-keeping around it. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a reading assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress.
