About this resource
Teach when to double the last letter before -ing and -ed. One 1-1-1 poster gives the three checks (one syllable, one short vowel, one final consonant), a chart works seven words through them, and 40 word cards to cut (20 that double and 20 that keep their spelling) go into a two-home sort. Desk strips, two fill-in pages, an answer key and a class roll-up let children practice the rule and let you see where the class is stuck. This is 23 pages, a fillable PDF you can type into or print.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (23 pages)
- 1 big poster, "1-1-1 Doubling Rule": the three checks, and examples (tap + ing, tap + ed, grab + ed, mop + ing), plus what to do when a word fails a check (wait, fix, snow).
- 1 check chart, "Check the Word": seven words (tap, wait, hunt, fix, clean, rob, mail) worked through the three checks, with the answer and the -ing and -ed forms.
- 40 word cards to cut: 20 words that double and 20 that keep their spelling, mixed on the page, in color and in ink-saver (4 cut pages).
- 8 desk strips to cut, each with the three checks and one example, in color and in ink-saver (2 cut pages).
- 1 sort mat with two homes, DOUBLE IT and KEEP IT, each with its test and a space for words the child is not sure about.
- 2 fill-in pages, 20 items in all: fill in the doubled letter (10 items, starting level: write one letter, then the whole word) and write the whole word and say whether it doubles (10 items, ready for more).
- Teacher pages: start here with a which-page-when chart, five short steps to teach it, two answer keys, a class roll-up with 40-word, 10-item and 10-item columns, a filled example (an invented class of six children), a family note, a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups.
- Contents, terms of use and a what's-next page.
How To Use It
Hang the 1-1-1 poster and read the three checks together. Use the chart to work two or three words aloud. Cut the word cards and let children sort them into DOUBLE IT and KEEP IT. Give each child a desk strip, then have them fill in the doubled letter, and later write the whole word and say whether it doubles. Check with the answer key and track the class on the roll-up.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a cue icon, and room to write. The word cards are text only, one neutral tint on every card, so the color never gives the answer away. Cut pages have at least five pieces, set edge to edge, with solid cut lines. Everything reads in black and white too.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, the fill-in pages, the class roll-up, the family note and every notes area are type-in fields in any PDF reader. You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Second and third grade teachers, reading and spelling specialists, and special education teachers working on -ing and -ed spelling with small groups or a whole class. Use it on the wall, at the table or in a literacy center. One classroom license.
