About this resource
Teach the floss rule with posters, cards and mats: one short vowel, one syllable, and the word ends in f, l, s or z, so double the last letter (cliff, bell, dress, buzz). This is 33 pages: four big rule posters for your wall, cards and strips to cut, sort mats, fill-in pages and desk strips so the rule stays close. Print what you need, or type into the pages first.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (33 pages)
- 4 big rule posters, one to a page: ff, ll, ss and zz. Each shows the three checks (one short vowel, one syllable, ends in the letter) and its words. 1 chart, "ff, ll, ss or zz?", puts all four on one page with two leave-it words.
- 20 word cards to cut, each in color and in ink-saver: cliff, stuff, fluff, sniff, huff, ball, bell, doll, well, yell, pill, dress, grass, kiss, mess, boss, buzz, fizz, jazz and fuzz. 5 across and 4 down, edge to edge.
- 6 picture cards to cut, each in color and in ink-saver: ball, bell, doll, well, dress and grass. Only words whose picture names one word clearly have a picture; every other word is typed in big letters.
- 8 leave-it cards to cut, each in color and in ink-saver: pencil, seal, hotel, leaf, towel, pool, camel and snail. They have two vowels together or two syllables, so they do not double.
- 8 desk strips and 8 sentence strips to cut, each in color and in ink-saver. 50 cut pieces in all (100 pieces on 10 cut sheets, color and ink-saver).
- 6 student pages with room to write: a check mat (pick a card, answer three questions), a "double it or leave it" sort mat, an ff / ll / ss / zz sort mat, a picture fill-in page (ll or ss), a circle-the-right-spelling page (10 items) and a write-sentences page with a word box.
- Teacher pages: Start Here with a which-page-when chart, five short steps to teach it, an answer key, a class roll-up, a filled example (an invented class), a note to families, a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups, and a binder cover with spine and 4 tabs.
- Contents, terms of use and a thank-you page with a look at more posters and cards from the store.
How To Use It
Hang the posters one at a time and read the words on each. Show the three checks: one short vowel, one syllable, ends in f, l, s or z. Children pick a card on the check mat and answer the three questions, then sort the cards on the mat: double it or leave it. Cut sets come in color and in ink-saver. Give each child a desk strip to keep the rule close, and use the roll-up to see which words to practice again.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and room to write. The doubled letters are colored in each word, and everything reads in black and white too.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, the check mat, the sort mats, the fill-in pages, the class roll-up, the family note and every notes area are type-in fields (193 in all) in any PDF reader. You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten to 2nd grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, phonics and spelling centers, paraprofessionals, substitutes, and families who want to practice the same rule at home.
