About this resource
Groundhog Day coloring pages that a PreK, kindergarten or self-contained class can all use at once, because the pages come in three levels. No prep: print the pages you need and hand them out. Every student page has a big My name line and one short instruction with a picture, so a paraprofessional can hand it out and walk away.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (28 pages)
- 1 cover, 1 Start Here page: what is inside, the three levels, ways to use the pages
- 6 starting-level coloring pages (circle): groundhog, burrow, sun, snowflake, tulip, shadow. Big simple shapes, and the word is printed in bold under the picture with a line to copy it on
- 6 building-level coloring pages (square): groundhog, sprout, robin, mitten, calendar, snowman. More parts, thinner lines; the child reads the word and copies it on a line
- 6 ready-for-more coloring pages (triangle): groundhog, tree, tulips, pinecone, boot, umbrella. Small patterns and details; the child writes the two colors used in a sentence
- 1 color-by-number groundhog: five numbered parts (1 brown, 2 tan, 3 yellow, 4 green, 5 white), with the key printed on the child's page
- 1 early-spring scene to color: a tree, a burrow with a groundhog peeking out, tulips and flowers, a sun, a snowflake and grass
- 3 shadow-or-no-shadow writing pages, one per level: circle your guess, then write "I think" (starting and building) or "I think ... because ..." (ready for more)
- 1 class tracker (Who Colored What) with a row for each of 9 children
- 1 family letter with a take-home guessing activity
- 1 credits page, with the two other Groundhog Day titles from this store
That is 18 single-picture coloring pages, plus the color-by-number groundhog and the spring scene: 20 coloring sheets in all.
Three Levels, Marked With Shapes
The level is marked by a circle, a square or a triangle next to the name line instead of a number, so children at one table are not comparing papers. The groundhog appears at all three levels, so you can see the difference side by side.
A Tradition, Not A Forecast
The shadow pages are a guessing game for each child. Nothing in the pack says the guess is right or wrong, and nothing teaches weather. Read the question aloud and let each child answer for themselves.
What The Pictures Are
Every student picture is drawn for this pack, with heavy outlines and almost no solid black, so it prints light on ink. There are no people, no costumes and no holiday history lessons in this pack; teach that with your own materials.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A print-and-color PDF, one page per child. It is not a fillable PDF and it is not Google Slides or a PowerPoint file. The fonts are KA Fonts and the clip-art kids on the teacher, family and credit pages are Whimsy Clips; the file is secured so the art cannot be lifted out of it.
Who This Is For
PreK, kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade teachers, and special education teachers who need Groundhog Day coloring at more than one level for a self-contained or resource room, or for a circle-time or centers rotation.
How To Use It
Print one page per child at the level that fits today. Use the spring scene as a whole-group page while you talk about what the children notice outside, then the shadow page. Staple a few pages with the family letter to send home.
