About this resource
Reading a first map takes more than a poster. A child needs a key to read, a grid to find a box on, and a way to tell a
map from a globe. This is a complete kit for those first map skills: nine student pages, answer keys, a tracker, a class
grid, a family note and a map center / meeting starter, so nothing has to be written from scratch.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (26 pages)
- 9 student pages: 3 Map Key pages (circle the name of each shape, count the shapes, name the place in a corner or the
middle), 2 Grid Box pages (A-C across, 1-3 down: what is at B2, and where is the school), 2 Map or Globe cut-and-glue
sorts, 1 Circle It page (MAP or GLOBE) and 1 blank classroom map to draw
- 12 cut-and-glue sort pieces (6 on each sort page, 3 for the map and 3 for the globe), touching edge to edge so the
cutting is a few straight lines
- 20 map or globe sentences in all, every one different
- 2 answer keys, built from the same map data as the student pages
- 1 tracker (8 map skills: started, with help, on my own) and 1 whole-class progress grid
- 1 family note (a ready-to-send update) and 1 map center / meeting starter (a different setting: whole class or a center)
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (15 observable-language starters), 1 binder cover and 4 divider
tabs with a spine label (5 pieces) to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, a contents page and a Words to Know page (map, globe, symbol, map key, grid, row,
column)
Shapes, Not Pictures
Every map is a drawn grid of boxes with plain shapes standing for places: a circle, a triangle, a square, a star, a
diamond, a hexagon. There is no picture of a real place anywhere in the file, so every page prints clean in black and
white and a child reads the key, not a cartoon.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, large rounded letters, big answer boxes and real room to write
or draw. Dots in the corner (not words) show how much a page asks. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult.
Type In, Or Print
The tracker, class grid, family note, meeting starter and name lines on the teacher pages are type-in fields in any PDF
reader. The answers a student writes, circles or glues are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides
or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher running a first map
unit. The map center / meeting starter takes the same ideas to a whole class; the family note sends them home.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A K-2 maps-and-globes worksheet set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a continents or oceans unit and does not
teach compass directions (those are separate resources in the store). There is no IEP goal language, eligibility wording
or claim about any student's age or rate of progress anywhere in the file.
