About this resource
A naming word, an action word, a describing word — first and second graders meet all three the moment they open a book, and this pack teaches each one as its own job before asking a child to tell them apart inside a sentence. Sort it, spot it, fill it in, then write an original one: four formats, easiest to hardest, with a helper page in kid words to start.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (28 pages)
- 11 student pages in 5 page types (below), each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction
- 54 practice items, all invented: 18 words to sort, 18 sentences to spot a word in, 18 sentences to fill in; no item repeats across the student pages
- 18 cut-and-glue words, six a page, in a block that takes 3 straight cuts
- 1 rules page for the teacher (with a blank line for your program's own wording), 3 answer keys generated from the same data as the pages
- 1 tracker (9 rows), 1 class progress grid, 1 team note, 1 home page, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters)
- 1 binder cover and 5 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, and a back page
THE FIVE PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)
1. Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives Helper (1 dot) — what each kind of word is, in kid words, on three cards, plus one sentence that uses all three.
2. Sort It (1 dot, 3 pages) — cut six words (two of each kind) and glue each one under Noun, Verb or Adjective.
3. Spot It (2 dots, 3 pages) — a full sentence with one bold word; the child circles what kind of word it is.
4. Fill in the Blank (2 dots, 3 pages) — a sentence with a blank and a three-word bank (one noun, one verb, one adjective); the child writes the word that fits the kind asked for.
5. Write Your Own (3 dots, 1 page) — a noun, a verb and an adjective are given; the child writes an original sentence with each and draws one.
Items come in three sets of six (A, B, C) on Sort It, Spot It and Fill in the Blank, so a child never meets the same item twice on one page type.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, large rounded letters, and writing boxes on primary lines at least 0.56 inch tall. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Cutting is limited to Sort It: six pieces a page, touching edge to edge, each wider than 2 inches and taller than 1.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note, the home page and the rules-page note box are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The letters a student writes in the boxes are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still needs to tell a noun from a verb from an adjective. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
