About this resource
A Pig the Elf book companion for read-aloud time: one big round Christmas ornament to color, cut and glue, a story-order page, a "My Christmas wish list" on three levels and "what would you do" kindness writing on three levels, in one print-and-go Christmas unit for PreK to 2nd grade.
The craft is a big red ornament with a gold cap and hook, and a fawn pug dog in a green elf hat with a gold bell. It is cut into 9 equal squares in three columns and three rows, so every cut is a straight line and there are only a few cuts. Children color the black-and-white pieces (or use the ready-colored set when coloring is not the goal that day), cut them out and glue each piece on its faint twin. Every glue box is exactly the size of its piece, and the nine pieces make the whole ornament. A picture step page shows every step with one short sentence each.
Then the book comes alive in writing. On the story-order page children cut 5 picture cards, glue 4 of them in order (First, Next, Then, Last) and leave out the one that does not belong, then write about it on 5 lines. On the wish list pages each child draws 3 wishes, finishes a list with a word bank, or writes a list and tells why, and the last level adds one wish for someone else. On the "what would you do" pages children circle a kind or not kind face for 4 sentences, finish "I would ... because ..." for 2 situations, or write freely about 2 situations. A character-words page asks which 2 words fit the pug, and a favorite-part page has a big box to draw in. Every student page has one short instruction with a picture and a "My name" line.
This is a companion, so it does not retell the book. It uses no text and no pictures from the book, so it fits whenever you read it, and the child answers about the pug and the favorite part from the book you read together.

Cutting Built For Small Hands
Every cutting page has big squares lined up edge to edge: 2.1 inches for the ornament pieces and 1.5 inches for the story cards. 23 pieces to cut in all (9 black-and-white pieces, 9 ready-colored pieces and 5 story cards). You will need crayons, scissors and glue sticks. Card stock suits the craft pages.
Three Skill Levels
Three small shapes beside the name line mark each leveled page (circle, square or triangle), with this page's shape dark. Easier: trace and draw, circle a face, or a partner who holds the glue stick. Harder: write a list and tell why, or write freely about a situation.
Who This Is For
PreK to 2nd grade classrooms, self-contained special education classrooms, and paraprofessionals who want a Christmas book craft with writing attached, ready to print.
