About this resource

A child who can read a silent-e word on a worksheet is ready for a book made only of them. These are four

little books, one for each vowel's silent e (a_e, i_e, o_e, u_e), eight mini-pages each, cut and stapled from

ONE sheet of paper: four straight cuts, stack the numbered pages, staple on the left. Every sentence uses only

words the child has been taught (this store's CVC and Fry-100 word banks, plus that book's own pictured CVCe

words), checked in code, and every sentence page has a picture with the word's silent e printed in color.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (33 pages)

"This book belongs to" line, 6 decodable sentence pages, and a back cover that lists the book's words with

a box beside each

rose, rope, cone, hole); u_e (cube, flute)

picture named the word)

hand-drawn pictures print in grayscale, since a hand drawing has no separate black-line twin)

three-line rule beside the picture to write it, and the picture to color

hand: rake, gate, nine, cone, hole, cube, rope)

for each one, and the book's words with a box to check

and 1 reading buddy card (a five-minute routine for a paraprofessional or volunteer)

How A Book Goes Together

One sheet per book, printed single-sided. Cut on the dashed lines: one down the middle and three across, four

straight cuts for eight pages. The pages touch edge to edge, so nothing is trimmed around. Stack by the number

in the corner of every mini-page, 1 on top through 8, and put two or three staples down the left edge. The

assembly page draws all three steps.

Three Versions Of Every Book

1. Read Book, color: read it together first, then the child reads it.

2. Read Book, ink-saver: the same book in black line (or grayscale for the hand-drawn pictures), for a class

set or a copy to keep.

3. Trace, Write and Color: trace the gray word, write it, color the picture.

Then the check: the Read It Without Pictures page puts the same six sentences in front of the child with no

picture at all, so you can see whether the words were decoded or guessed. The child colors a star for each

sentence read; the counts you take go on the tracker.

Built For The Child Holding The Page

A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, large rounded type, and dots (not words) to show

which version a page is. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult.

What The Pictures Can And Cannot Do, Said Plainly

The a_e and o_e books have six pictured words each, so every sentence in those two books uses a different

word. The i_e book has only four pictured words and the u_e book only two, so a picture is shown on a

second (or, for u_e, a third) page with a new sentence each time — said on the Start Here page, the same

way this store's CVC Word Family Decodable Mini-Books says it for its one-pictured-word short-i book. 11 of

the 18 pictures are Noto/Fluent emoji, checked in both the color and black-line sets; the other 7 (rake,

gate, nine, cone, hole, cube, rope) have no picture in either set that plainly names the word, so they are

drawn by hand — and since a hand drawing has no separate black-line twin, the ink-saver and Trace-Write

books print it in grayscale rather than a second drawing. If a child gives a picture another name, say the

printed word.

Type In, Or Print

The name line on every mini-book cover, the name and date lines on every student page, the tracker, the class

grid, the team note, the home page and the reading log are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The sentence

pages are pencil, crayon and scissors work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or

PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Kindergarten through second-grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, small groups, and any

teacher with an older student who still needs a book of silent-e words to read. The home page sends a book

home to a family; the reading buddy card hands the same five minutes to a paraprofessional or volunteer; the

team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

A print-and-assemble set of decodable booklets with the record-keeping around it. It is not a reading

curriculum, not a phonics program, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. It uses the

same 18-word silent-e bank as this store's Silent E CVCe K-2 Cut and Paste, in a different format: a book to

read instead of a sort.
