About this resource
Some children can tell you what a story was about and still cannot say how it started, what happened in the middle, or how it ended. These pages put the three parts in boxes a child can see: read a short made-up story, then draw it, write it, cut it and glue it.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (29 pages)
- 14 student pages in 6 page types: a Story Map Helper, 4 Read and Map pages, 2 Five-Box Map pages, 2 Story Strips, 3 Cut and Glue pages, and 2 Plan and Write pages
- 9 invented short stories: 4 to read and map in three boxes, 2 to read and map in five boxes, 3 to cut and glue
- 18 story pieces to cut and glue (6 a page, two for each of Beginning, Middle and End)
- 2 answer keys, generated from the same story data as the pages
- 1 progress tracker (13 pages listed), 1 class progress grid
- 1 team note page and 1 home page for the kitchen table
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (20 starters)
- 1 binder cover and 5 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here and a how-to-read-a-page page, so you know which page for which child
The Six Page Types
1. Story Map Helper: three cards (Beginning, Middle, End) with one model story, then three boxes for the child to draw a story they know.
2. Read and Map (4 pages): read a short story, then draw and write the beginning, the middle and the end, with a drawing box and writing lines for each.
3. Five-Box Map (2 pages): who is in it, where it is, then beginning, middle and end in words.
4. Story Strip (2 pages): three frames and lines to retell a book, and then a day of the child's own.
5. Cut and Glue (3 pages): six story pieces, cut apart and glued two to a box under Beginning, Middle and End.
6. Plan and Write (2 pages): pick a story idea, draw and write a plan, then write the story on lines.
Pages carry dots, not words, so the children at one table cannot see who has which page.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, large rounded letters, and plenty of room to draw and write. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Answers, the tracker and the notes are on separate teacher pages.
Easy Cutting
Every cutting page has 6 pieces in a 3 by 2 grid, edge to edge, so a page takes only a few straight cuts. Each piece is 1.4 inches tall and a third of the page wide.
The Stories
All 9 stories are made up for this resource and written in short, plain sentences with one clear thing happening in each part. The file checks that every Cut and Glue sentence begins with a cue word that belongs to its own box and to no other. No student information is pre-filled; the example student is invented and says so on the page.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The student pages print clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten through second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher with an older child who still needs to practice telling a story in order. The home page sends the same job to a family with no scissors required.
