About this resource

A book companion for use with the picture book There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow, for PreK to 2nd grade: a silly chant in pictures, a story map, cut-and-glue story order, a wear-it-or-not sort, rhyme time, a retell on three levels and a snow-lady craft, in one print-and-go unit.

The chant page is our own made-up chant, not the book's words: a cold lady swallows snow, a sock, boots, a cat and a bird, and at the end sits by the fire and feels warm. It is all pretend and just for fun. There is one picture for each part, so you can read it aloud after the book and compare the two.

Then the thinking pages. On the story map children draw and write the characters, setting, problem and solution. On the story-order page they cut 6 picture cards, glue 5 in order and leave out the one that does not belong. On the wear-it-or-not sort they cut 10 pictures (boots, mittens, scarf, socks, hat, cat, bird, fire, mug, snowy hill) and glue each in its place. On the what-she-swallowed page they draw each thing in order and write its word from a word bank. Rhyme time has 4 rows with 3 words each to circle. Every sort and rhyme piece has one right answer, and the answers are on the class data page.

The retell comes on three levels (a circle, square or triangle shape by the name line): draw and trace, finish four sentences with a word bank, or retell the whole chant in your own words. A page called my silly idea has a big drawing box and two lines for a child's own cold lady chant.

The craft is a big round snow lady with a knit cap, glasses, a scarf and a snowflake on her tummy, cut into 9 equal squares in three columns and three rows. Color the black-and-white pieces (or use the ready-colored set), cut and glue each piece on its twin; every glue box is exactly the piece size. Every student page has one short instruction with a picture and a "My name" line.

What'S Inside

21 sheets in all, 16 of them for students.

Cutting Built For Small Hands

Every cutting page has big squares lined up edge to edge: 2.1 inches for the snow-lady pieces, 1.25 inches for the story cards and 1.52 inches for the sort cards. 34 pieces to cut in all. You will need crayons, scissors and glue sticks. Card stock suits the craft pages.

Who This Is For

PreK to 2nd grade classrooms, self-contained special education classrooms, and paraprofessionals who want a winter book companion with sequencing, sorting, rhyming and writing at three levels.
