About this resource
A vowel valley for your sound wall, with no mouth pictures: just the vowel, its sound, and three picture words on each card. This is 38 pages. Print the whole valley on one page, or print bigger wall cards, trim them and post them in a V. Color and ink-saver versions of both. Print what you need, or type in the names and notes before you print.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (38 pages)
- 18 vowel cards with 54 picture words: 5 short vowels (a, e, i, o, u), 5 long vowels, 5 vowel teams (oo as in moon, oo as in book, ow and ou, oi and oy, aw and au) and 3 r-controlled cards (ar, or, er ir ur). Each picture word is printed beside its picture with the vowel pattern in color.
- Words on the cards: apple, ant, hat, egg, bed, hen, igloo, pig, zipper, octopus, dog, fox, umbrella, duck, sun, cake, train, hay, bee, seal, key, kite, dice, lightbulb, rope, boat, snowman, unicorn, uniform, glue, moon, zoo, pool, book, cookies, football, cow, house, mouse, coins, oil, toys, saw, applesauce, yawn, car, barn, shark, corn, horse, fork, bird, tiger, turtle.
- 4 valley posters in color and 4 in ink-saver (short, long, vowel teams, r-controlled): each valley fits on one letter-size sheet.
- 4 sheets of wall cards in color and 4 in ink-saver: six cards to a page, each 3.6 by 3.05 inches. That is the 18 vowel cards plus a group card for each group, a Vowel Valley title card and a "say the sound" card. Trim and post them in a V; a how-to page shows where each card goes.
- 10 desk strips to cut, on 2 sheets: short and long vowels, then vowel teams and r-controlled, each with a name line. One straight cut between strips. The strips are words only.
- Student pages: color the vowels in the valley, trace the short vowels, copy the long vowels, write three words for each short vowel, and a finished page with a star to color.
- Two cut-and-sort activities, each with a glue mat: 20 word pieces (4 words for each of 5 columns) cut edge to edge in 4 rows of 5, 40 word pieces in all. Sort A is short vowels; sort B is vowel teams and r-controlled.
- Teacher pages: an answer key with a place to type your own word for each card, a vowel check (sound, reads three words, writes), a class roll-up for 14 children, a filled example with invented children, a letter to families and a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups.
- Terms of use and a thank-you page.
How To Use It
Print the short vowel valley and hang it, or print the wall cards on cardstock, trim them and post the cards in a V: first card high on the left, middle card lowest, last card high on the right. Point to a card, say the sound, say the three words. Cut the desk strips, write a name on each and tape one to every desk. Use the color, trace, copy and sort pages to practice, and the vowel check and roll-up to see where each child is.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and room to work. Words on the cut pages are text only, and everything reads in black and white too.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, key, vowel check, roll-up, family letter and notes areas are type-in fields in any PDF reader (205 fields in all). You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten to 3rd grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and anyone who wants a sound wall vowel valley without mouth pictures.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Working paper and room decoration for vowel sounds. There are no mouth pictures. It is not a reading program or an assessment, and it promises no outcome. Programs name and order the vowel sounds differently, so the key page has a column for your own word beside ours. The vowel check is a place for your own marks.
