About this resource

Listen, find the word, cover it, get 4 in a row. CVC Bingo is a phonics game for kindergarten and first grade: eight word boards of short vowel words, 80 calling cards to cut out, a rules page, a blank board and a game record. Every word is a three-letter consonant-vowel-consonant word, and there are no pictures to guess from. Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and big words in boxes a small hand can cover. Untimed: no clock, no score on the child's page.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (30 pages: 16 student pages, 14 for you)

• 8 word boards, each a 4 x 4 grid of 16 CVC words (128 word squares): one for each short vowel a, e, i, o and u, and 3 mixed boards
• Short a to Short u: each board holds all 16 words of its vowel (5 pages)
• Mixed 1 and Mixed 2: three words of each vowel plus one more; the two boards share no word (2 pages)
• Mixed 3: look-alike words that differ only in the middle vowel, such as bag, beg, big and bug (1 page)
• 1 blank board to write your own 16 words, and a strip showing the three ways to get 4 in a row on every board
• 80 calling cards to cut, 16 to a page, one page for each vowel (5 pages), plus a page of 16 blank cards. Cards sit edge to edge, so cutting is three straight cuts each way

Built For The Child, Not The Office

Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (an ear, scissors or a pencil), and big words in the rounded font. Each cutting page is one grid of 16 cards, every card about 1.9 by 1.4 inches. Everything for you (rules, the board check page, tracking) is on separate teacher pages.

Three Levels, Marked By Dots

One dot: a Short board, all one vowel (starting). Two dots: a Mixed board with all five vowels (building). Three dots: Mixed 3 with look-alike words, and the blank board (ready for more). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.

Every Board And Card Is Checked

Every board has its own set of words, every called word is on at least one board, and every word on a board has a calling card. The board check page prints each board exactly as it is laid out, so you can check a BINGO in seconds.

Type In, Or Print

The name and date lines, the blank board, the game record, the tracker, class grid, team note and family page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the boards and cards are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

A game for practicing reading short vowel words, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full phonics curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress.
