About this resource
EVERYTHING INSIDE — 21 pages, 272 type-in fields
- 6 kitchen safety rule cards, 2 inches square: Hot stove, Sharp knife, Wash hands, Ask first, Pot handles in, Stand back
- A "six rules at a glance" page showing the whole set in a plain grid with NO numbers and NO connecting arrows, because these six rules are not steps in a routine — the page says so directly
- Every card twice: a full-color set for daily handling and a black-and-white ink-saver set for the photocopier
- A "what each card shows" reference table on every card page, naming exactly what picture is on each card and the rule it stands for
- 12 blank rule cards with a type-in word line, for any kitchen safety rule the printed set does not cover
- A how-to page: before the first time, using whichever card applies (no fixed order), and what the log codes mean
- A Rule Recognition Log (20 rows: date, one letter per rule — independently, with a prompt, or not reviewed — and initials)
- A weekly roll-up (8 weeks) with a percent-identified-independently graph
- A filled example — an invented student, one review session on the log and three weeks on the roll-up, every percent re-counted from its own row
- A Family Update: a look at all six cards, a week of home-practice tracking, and blanks for the family
- A hand-off page so a paraprofessional, a family member or another room uses the same six cards the same way
- A phrase bank: 18 lines in 5 groups (spoken words for each rule, written starters for the log, the roll-up and the family update)
- A storage and binder label sheet
- Start Here, a contents page with page thumbnails, and a "what's next" back page
Six everyday kitchen safety rules as picture cards, with a recognition log and roll-up behind them so noticing a rule on their own, instead of needing a prompt, turns into a line on a page a family or case manager can bring to a meeting.
The Six Rules
- Hot stove — a stove burner; a hot stove means don't touch it
- Sharp knife — a kitchen knife; a sharp tool means ask an adult first
- Wash hands — a bar of soap; wash hands before cooking or touching food
- Ask first — an electric plug; ask an adult before turning on an appliance
- Pot handles in — a pot on the stove; turn the handles in, away from the edge
- Stand back — a person stepping back; stay a safe distance from a hot stove
Every picture was chosen to be named in one word by a young child, in color AND in the black-and-white set. Cards are 2 inches square and are NOT numbered: these six rules can come up in any order, so nothing on the cards or the glance page implies one.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
It is a fillable PDF: type into the log, the roll-up, the family update, the hand-off page and the blank cards, or print and use a pen. The card and glance pages print on cardstock or plain paper and cut along dashed lines. It works offline with no account or subscription. It is NOT an editable online slideshow or word-processor document.
It is a set of picture reminders for six kitchen safety rules, and a place to record whether each rule was recognized. It is not a cooking lesson, a safety-compliance manual, a behavior plan, or a program of any kind, and it promises no outcome. It carries no prompt hierarchy, fading schedule or mastery rule; how it is used with a student, and for how long, is what your family or team's plan says. The goal line and the criterion field are blanks for your district's own wording and your team's own number. The log counts one thing per rule: whether help was needed, not what kind or in what order to remove it. This file names no recipe, no food and no appliance brand, and it does not state what happens after an unsafe moment — that is a blank line on the hand-off page.
Who This Is For
Special education teachers, families and paraprofessionals teaching everyday life-skills kitchen safety rules to early, pre-reading or emerging-language students, case managers who need that teaching to show up as data, and the teams who get the update sent home.
