About this resource
A red yellow green behavior chart works when children can see the three zones, know what each one means, and know how to start fresh. This is 26 pages: two zone posters, a blank poster for your own words, zone cards and calm-down choice cards to cut, name clips, three daily charts where children circle a color, two self-check pages, and the teacher pages to run it. Print what you need, or type into the pages first.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (26 pages)
- 4 zone posters: a stacked-zones poster and a tall-columns poster, each in color and in ink-saver. Every zone has a picture, a short label and one line in kid words. The columns poster adds three "I can" choices under each zone.
- The 3 zones: Green Zone (Ready and Safe), Yellow Zone (Slow Down), Red Zone (Stop and Reset).
- 1 blank poster you type your own zone words into.
- 24 pieces to cut, set edge to edge so each cut is one straight line: 6 zone-card pieces (3 zone cards and 3 write-on cards), 6 calm-down choice cards and 12 name clips. The zone and choice sheets are also included in an ink-saver version (5 cut sheets in all; the ink-saver sheets repeat the same pieces and are not counted again).
- The 6 calm-down choices: Take a Breath, Use My Words, Ask for Help, Take a Break, Try Again, Get a Drink.
- 3 daily charts for children: My Day by block (8 blocks, morning and afternoon), My Day with your own blocks typed in, and My Week (Monday to Friday, morning and afternoon). Children circle green, yellow or red.
- 2 self-check pages for children: a circle level (4 "I" statements, circle a color, draw my best green moment) and a write level (circle the zone, write what happened and what I can do next time, draw my plan).
- Teacher pages: how to set up the chart, how to teach it in 5 short routines, a class tally for the zone each day, a filled example (an invented class and an invented child), a home note, a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups, and a binder cover with spine and 4 tabs.
- Terms of use and a thank-you page.
How To Use It
Hang the poster at children's eye level. Cut the name clips and start each day (or each block) on green. Notice green out loud: "I saw you ____." Yellow is a calm reminder, and red is a reset: stay calm, offer a choice card, and help the child start fresh. Children circle a color on their daily chart, check themselves on the self-check page, you mark the class tally, and the home note tells families what you are practicing.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and big circles to fill or a box to draw in. Pictures are simple objects: a traffic light for each zone, a flower, a speech bubble, an hourglass. The posters and cut pages come in a color set and an ink-saver set, and every page reads in black and white too.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, the blank poster, the daily chart with your own blocks, the write-on zone cards, the name clips, the write-level self-check, the class tally, the home note and every notes area are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The posters and the other charts are print pages. You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
PreK to 5th grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and anyone who wants a three-color behavior chart that is positive, picture-based and easy to read.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Classroom posters and working paper. It is not a curriculum, a therapy program or a behavior plan, and it makes no health claims. It does not take anything away from a child, and red is never a punishment. Your school decides its own rules and next steps; the setup page gives you a blank to write them in your school's words.
